So I looked up "tropical island plants" on google and found this little site: [link]
I used a couple of images of orchids and I really liked the idea of using ti plant leaves since they're used for thatching and shoes (as said in the description.) I thought the colors of orange orchids would pair nicely with the colors of the reddish-green ti leaves.

With those in my mind, I designed this. I had a simple, strapless party dress silhouette in mind as well. The final dress has a thatched/woven bodice which is trimmed with vines. I also wanted the back to lace up, since that would be the only possable way for her to keep this dress on! The skirt of the dress is made of multiple sized ti plant leaves, the long, thin ones are on the inside to give the skirt more body as well as more coverage. The leaves get shorter and wider with each layer (total of for layers of leaves. Small orchids are used as accents on the lacings and as a necklace. Two larger orchids are used, one as a hair accessory and the other as an accent on the front of the dress. The sandals are made of drift wood, ti leaves (like the bodice) and vines.

I really liked how it turned out ^_^

Judges' comments
took the greatest risk by designing a rather basic dress with a weaved corset and ti plant leaves for the skirt. The bodice of the dress was constructed out of some kind of leaf, but the thing that most stood out was the skirt, the red striped ti leaves. The skirt was appealing here we go again with the weaved top, The little flower on the right was cute, but other than that, it was a basic dress. The colors are very vibrant and have that whole island flare to them…The flowers are drawn well. And it’s just overall appealing!
